All Change!

Feb 13, 2022

Never saw it coming...

Been a little while since I last posted, and boy have I been busy!

So, quick recap - (like you didn’t know already…) Covid – 19 took over the world and made everyone think about what they were doing, how they were doing it – and if they even needed to do 'it' at all.

I thought I would be working away in my little work studio, taking on various projects from different opera houses, music venues and film studios – making major in-roads in my world domination plans to be the Jeff Bezos of the costume world, but with more panache, colour and style. Or driving around the South East of England, living in hastily procured accommodation from the professional digs list, trying not to be a nuisance to my landlord or lady. On the rare occasion when I was withing striking distance of my bed

Alas, it was not to be.

I ended up living miles from home in a  part of the world I had never been to in my life. I trotted around the local supermarket alongside muddy welly wearing animal loving (and I don’t just mean cats and dogs) tractor on the high street riding individuals, who do not appear to care that the talented Virgil Abloh no longer walks among us.

The biggest magazine purchase hot on the shelves around here is The Horse Riders Almanac.

I was ready to suffer agonies of no culture.

No fresh and funky music.

No on - trend clothing.

I imagined a sea of clapped-out cars and fields full of ragged scarecrows.

What do people do with their time around here?

Must I travel to Middle Earth to find a cinema?

By the time the high street clock strikes 7pm, the streets are deserted.

Where is everyone?

Being the ultimate urban squirrel, I’m out of my league.

In the meantime, having uprooted myself from my studio, I packed my work belonging’s and put everything in storage until that wonderful day comes around where I could unpack my boxes and reconnect with all my treasures.

I now find myself the Head Tailor of a department, working from a facility with echoing hangar-like qualities. Where before, I only had myself to think about with the occasional set of sub-contractors, depending on the workload – I am now mother hen to 10 tailors. All with differing needs and abilities.

Every set of costumes need checking. Timesheets need perusing. Objectives need structuring. I’ve never been so busy.

It's fab.

There has been some interesting discoveries in this new area which I currently reside.

I stumbled upon where some of the townsfolk disappear to of an evening.

There’s a blues society behind my temporary accommodation, and a live weekly jazz session across the road.

Last month  I took a wrong turn down what appeared to be a back alley, and came face to face with the local cinema, which was showcasing the latest blockbuster I was gasping to see and already resigned myself to make do with watching yet another Steven Segal movie.

In the short time I have lived locally, the local park has hosted funfairs, fireworks, motor shows, and a 50’s swing dance off. Oh, and a brief landing by a private helicopter.

Does anyone just sit down and relax around here?

As I type away on this blog, I can hear the roar of yet another a V8 engine.

The only sign of rust on metal around here are the rivets on the historic buildings across town.

Is there no end to this busyness?

As I come to terms with these revelations, I ponder -  Is my car the oldest vehicle in the area? I think so. I can’t compete with the luxury sports cars and huge tractors on the roads.

Time for my first country walk.

It’s a bright and beautiful day.

Time to christen my brand-new wellies.
